- Farid Raihan

"Country Musik: Movements' is a series of 20 collagraphs created during Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. The compositions are based on a 2019 installation and participatory project 'In The Skin of A Tiger: Monument To What We Want (Tugu Kita)', consisting of 13 banners in geometric shapes sewn from reclaimed election campaign flags. Together, the 20 compositions are a kind of music that reflects the massive shifts of 2020 – from the Covid pandemic to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government in March, just before the nation went into its first lockdown" - Sharon Chin

"The kabuki show frog embraces the ever changing roles to set himself as a protagonist in the drama or tragedy of life. He adapts very well to the new scripts and dialogues prepared for him to perform his best. He blends and learns well from the harsh environment around him, he is resilient and focused. His best well-kept secret to survival in the struggle of life is his amphibious nature. The King still remains even without a costume." - Stephen Menon

"During RMCO I took a walk around KL to observe the "new normal". Almost everything was closed save for a few family-owned businesses. One such business was a flower shop run by an old couple; their flowers felt out of place. I stopped to smell the flowers and realized that something as small as a flower could have such a large impact on my day. This made me question how much of an impact I could have on someone else's day. I chose to paint flowers because they are seen as a symbol of compassion and positivity when times are bleak. I hope this painting can be a reminder to stay positive and encourage everyone to spread a little love in these difficult times. When we leave lockdown it’ll be with a new sense of community, hope, and optimism; like flowers in a pandemic." - Christian Lau

"Greenery in nature is a color said to be very therapeutic to one’s mind and soul. It is not a personal view but the color “GREEN” especially in Islam is the most beautiful color in nature. Nature is very comforting to one’s psychology. As the world-changing, and poorly planned infrastructure, our forests begin to deteriorate. Human-driven greediness and unsustainable forest management led to these difficulties. As a person that loves nature and is grateful for God’s creation, it saddened me to see this enigma. Through deforestation of our environment, I portray myself as a subject that symbolizes the sadness through deforestation of our nature where dried roots crawl over the body and the repetition of body gestures creates movement that shows the subject in agony. Dark colors are applied in the artwork to represent the dark, desolate, and misery of the subject" - Iylia Afiat

"The shape of the color palette is very similar to the games we played when we were kids, like 'Congkak' and 'Lompat ketinting'.The big palette also appears like spaces where one may hide. So these interesting ideas have turned into an interesting process of teaching my children to draw. With the inspiration of this painting, I combined the children's creativity with my discovery, and returned to the original intent of expressing pure and playful feelings." - Jasmine Cheong

"This artwork takes an interesting perspective of the poster colour. I used the vision of the top view to make this picture interesting. The perspective of this top view provides us with the outside of the poster colour lid, the inside of the lid, and the inside of the container of paint. It continues the series of my artwork hide and seek. I play with the fun and simple children with the colour paint, so that people who watch the work can also like play hide and seek, guess where is that and what is that .The interesting part of my work is that it involves some form of abstract and realism, which reflects a combination of objects and feelings" - Jasmine Cheong

- Loqman Hakim

"Everything that has made a visual appearance to our eyes marks an existence. It occupies a space no matter what form it arrives as,whether a pebble from the stream we grasp in our palm or the water that flows through our feet or the peaks we witness before us, they mark their arrival into this physical world. Whether it creates interests to one or not, it is closely relatable to us that is glorified with marks and textures. One does not only experience its existence by physical but psychological touch. To witness and respect the beauty of life, is to love." - Mark Lee

"Uncle Lim, (127cm x 96cm) an old family friend and contractor of renovations at our home had a friendliness and calm demeanour that stood out to me from my childhood days. He had a passion for gardening and nature that complemented his own serenity within. I have captured him in the midst of gardening beaming with the joy of nature. I did this, particularly in the background, by imitating David Hockney’s painting technique in ‘The Joy of Nature’." - Mary Ann Thomas

"In a temporary and unstable reception, my work obsessively explores the interplay of juxtaposition between an object, body, and primary situation which directly involves the mundane aspect of everyday life. Fundamentally, each alteration is to reveal or create an otherwise obscure feature, which attempts to destabilize the viewer’s noon of reality and authenticity. In an abstract situation, this idea is driven by taking familiar objects, subjects and procedures out of the real context to elicit new interpretations that are normally unstable. In this a!empt, I recontextualized the subject in order to simulate the viewer’s imagination and transcend an alternative visual vocabulary which we called “subjective construct”. I focus on blurring the original meaning into a new structure for the audience in revealing “new logic” which is inspired by Roland Barthes “third meaning” that suggests every image has its own accidental meaning in evoking a sense of the extraordinary within the ordinary. Time becomes the acon; unfamiliarity becomes the priority’." - Mohammad Zulkefli

"Since the global pandemic outbreak, the entire world has been under constant hardship and struggle. Our country is among the ones facing the worst implications of the pandemic. Inspired by classic video games, this pop-surrealism inspired artwork symbolizes the struggle of our country’s citizens, especially the ones that were affected financially, and often mentally, by the pandemic and the lack of financial source during the Movement Control Order. Comparing the pandemic life with playing video games, I have emphasised on the importance of strategically preparing ourselves, physically and mentally in order to survive in this trying time." - Haris Hilmi

"The main inspiration for all the work comes from a love affair with the emotion, beauty, and sickness of self expression to create something that conjures a moment of insight or memories. My works are usually inspired by nature through memory, experience and the environment that catch my eye and every work is a memory at that moment. I am always intrigued with the beauty of texture, line, form, gesture and color based on the subject. The work initiates and takes its structure from rudimentary visual gesture, a scrawl, a mark and scratch. Emphasizing the process, I play with swiftness and imperfection in the work and expose my own process of discovery through the mark-making. The physical and emotional process of creation renders a delicate balance between body, memory and psychology. The final result is an expression of my own self reflection." - Nazhan Fikri

- Aina Arif

“Humans live in their perception of reality, never in the real world. They have a version of the world inside their heads and these things are never perfect. "Texture and depth, intersecting spatial forms, as well as a love of detail have become the focus of my painting. My artwork is always a journey of discovery into the essence of being. It is an effort to externalize the truth of my own existence on as many levels as possible and communicate a greater awareness of the quality of life. This artwork provides the viewer with the ethereal experience of finding images and shapes within and behind other shapes and providing the viewer with a “safe passage” through the canvas. The compositions invite the viewer to reach their own conclusions about what the symbolism may represent. My artwork creates seemingly endless varieties of contrast and vibrant interaction, raised and recessed surfaces, and glossy and matte combined finishing. - Faris Ridwan

"My artwork is inspired by the concept of origami where I focus on the folding technique. I am interested in this concept because of the historical ‘Thousand of Crane’ which symbolises ‘hope’ in Japanese Belief. I manipulate the materiality of metal plates to create the audience's perception of paper character. By using the discipline of 3 dimensional (sculpture), I expand the understanding of drawing and apply it to wall pieces. As a sculpture based graduate, I discovered a technique that can expand into drawing but remain the essence of sculpture. ‘Online Class’ reflects from the current situation impact from the Movement Control Order (MCO) which affects the educational sector.Student cannot attend the physical classes as usual which change the educational way of teaching and learning. But as an artist, I believe there is still hope in the educational system in the midst of a pandemic. I portrayed the meaning of hope through this artwork which is paradoxically demonstrating the metal into the character of a paper sheet- Amirul Yazid

"The idea of middle class muddle on self-concept is obsolete by the escalation in the digital age. In this artwork, the juxtaposition of images and subjects that I try to visualize is the distinction between my local culture and western standard of living. Where I use a semiotic as to propel the meaning of how I as the figure in the artwork shown where my culture or my life was more outmoded and somewhat try to grasp up or synchronize with current time. Compared to the astronaut (western) image displayed that is already sentient and far beyond with all this technological advancement. Moreover, the visual syntax in this artwork shows as if giving to me (middle class) and where I receive it with gratitude as if it were a great favor commencing the gift from above (Heaven).- Heidhir Hamdan

"This artwork inspired me when I was having a severe hair loss problem. I started to collect my fallen hair every single day, and I did it for a month. Gradually, the accumulated hair volume began to form a shape like a bird’s nest. Hair loss is one of the effects of stress on your body. There are relations between hair and human’s mental health, for example, anxiety, depression, stress and so on… We are told anxiety is a legitimate response to the stresses of modern living, and anxiety is almost considered a status symbol that signals how busy and successful we are.
“Fallen Hair” has remained the stress that life has to give to us. But using this fallen hair to rebuild a home for people suffering from anxiety has redefined the meaning of anxiety for them, a home sweet home.- Liew Mei Toong

"This artwork is a continuation of the previous artwork entitled ''NEST”. It depicts a person hugging another, but they share the same body, essentially representing your other self. I hope this work reminds everyone to love themselves. If you are having a hard time, pat yourself on the back. Take care of yourself, it is normal to be anxious, worried, and uncertain during this time. However, remember that it is hard to take care of others if you neglect yourself. So do not forget to be self-aware and to know when it is time to take a step back and have a break.

"How much data does Google or Facebook have on us? Do we know how we are harvested of our data when we use free services like Google or Facebook?
Our lives converge on this platform; we share things we assume is correct. We show our preferences and taste on the platform that quickly leads the platform to understand us further. Doesn’t it feel weird when something we googled showed up as an ad on websites and social media? Like a big brother is stalking us. On top of that, misleading articles would sometimes appear to us as well. Social media is the leading platform that can sway public opinions. Any form of misinformation will create an unnecessary polarization in society. Hence, these attributes of Facebook and Google inspired me to produce these two images, ‘Farcebook’ and ‘Oogle’ in this series of works. - Lim Li Wei

"The artist describes her state of limbo throughout this ongoing pandemic in her current series of works titled “In A Limbo”. She questions her future, freedom and presence in a new world, as she embarks on a journey of discovering her authentic self, the divinity within and around her, and to find peace as she navigates this new and uncertain landscape. She hopes, just like everyone else experiencing this sense of doom and gloom, to find the strength and resilience to keep carrying on as the nation and the world continues to be stricken by this deadly, devastating pandemic." - Rekha Menon

"Through this series, I try to capture the buildings of today in Kuala Lumpur. Some of these buildings have become iconic buildings and landmarks of their time. A lot of new development has come at the cost of old existing structures. At this junction, I am curious about what the city of the future might look like. As sturdy as we think our civilization is, its grip on nature is tenuous as best. If any cracks appear in the faces of our buildings, nature is quick to move in and take over. Our buildings would begin crumbling soon after without human maintenance or energy sources. Would nature win the battle against civilization? Here I use drypoint etchings to serve a visual historical document and record." -Tan Kar Mern

-Zulaikha Simon

"Theoretically, the mind moves in opposition to the conscious mind and the emotion exists when the feeling or soul is stimulated in psychology or surroundings that are capable to create emotional waves. This wave becomes a form of infinity, it is like a cycle of nature that move from one to another. "Always trying to fix myself in a territory, I constantly play with contouring in my re-created and reconstructed landscape paintings as to define and re-define who I am and where I belong. In this artwork, I painted the contours of desert mountains and also the ocean from a bird eye’s/top view. Yet, from a side elevation view, the contours may seem like the layers of the desert mountains against the misty clouds in the air. With that, there are also repeated little women in hair buns swimming in the ocean or being afloat in the clouds. The play of different perspectives in this painting and the disorientation of the women figures are to represent the battle of being in limbo of one’s identity. Identity itself can be paradoxical. It can mean both sameness and distinctiveness. So this painting is questioning my/your/our quest for an identity." -Hana Zamri
