"These two new artworks reflect on the effects the pandemic has on multiple levels of our livelihood, sociopolitical and economic, personal and professional. I had my 3rd solo exhibit last year, during the last few months of the grace period after the first MCO, and right before the opening day, the government announced MCO 2.0, and the exhibition froze in the already cold situation. It's not so much about the sale that tears me, but the fact that the exhibit had gone without an audience. As if it never happened. However, in hindsight, I am also grateful i finished the body of work, after 8 years of carrying it, and now I can soldier on to the next thing. The message that I learned from this experience is that we have to persevere, and that life is designed not merely to break our hearts, but also to define our strength and grit" - Edroger Rosli

"Presented in pale white coloured, engraved names on my wood panel are the ones who lost their lives in the first 72 hours. To date, we lost millions of precious lives, including my two neighbours. This prompts me to ponder further — questions.  The central empty part of my work is the word “Wen” (it means “questions” in simplified Chinese), the calligraphy “Wen” will be revealed obviously under the strong lighting. Like all of you, I have so many questions to ask — What is the source of this virus? Where does this come from? When will it be ended? Could we avoid this event at the beginning? What could we learn from this event? How could we stop it? Could we have our normal life back?

The methodology of this art piece is deeply connected with its core concept – the damaged and repaired effect (with use of pastel and glue, I managed to stick back certain damaged pieces) symbolized how our life going through, while scars might be the one remained. The whole work is painted in white to symbolize the grieving but also it represents my hope for victory to overcome this event.” - Chris Tan

- NIk Mohd Husyaidie

Beneath Our Skin.jpg

"My artwork explores our human awareness, a sensitivity to what lies beneath our facade. As abstract as it may sound, a quote from “Blind willow, sleeping woman” provides an insight.: I sometimes think that people’s hearts are like deep wells. Nobody knows what’s at the bottom. All you can do is imagine what comes floating to the surface every once in a while.

Along the course of our lives, we bury our fears, and memories deep within our well of subconsciousness, forming our emotional schema. If left unaddressed, our physical body becomes subject to our subconsciousness and what we see may be detrimental to our wellbeing. It is when we venture into the dark nights of the soul and confront each fragment of memories deep within our wells, our journey of acceptance begins. Slowly but surely, each step brings us to a new level of awareness and integration of our whole selves." - Joy Ng

Self Worth.jpg

"This piece is the first one I created upon graduating. It displays emotions familiar to all fresh graduates and individuals in transitions. It is a contemplation of their own place in the world, services and contribution to the world and mark-making in their lifetime. The subject gazes upon her hand, which is the focus of the artwork and symbolizes “doing”. At the same time, it also represents the fidgeting that accompanies our midnight thoughts and sleepless nights. In addition, I believe that the reality of our life is often constructed by our interpretation of events and self-set standards. I intentionally allowed some paints to show through the base layers to portray our perceived reality. This is because our standards and foundations may be shaky depending on where we derive our values and standards. As trends, ideas and popularity pass quickly, these changes result in a shift in our perceptions and our inner reality. We are prompted to evaluate, “Where are we deriving our ideas and principles of life from?” - Joy Ng

"Have a walk into nature;

Being attentive to the details that surround;

Add in random dots.

With an interest in nature, I find myself being able to bring my consciousness back to where I am, an ignored place of solitude where I can contemplate, slow down my pace and to observe the things around me. The process of concentrating and focusing on the present moment by bringing the dots walking in nature, embraces time and space. This work corresponds to aspects of minimalist practice on simplicity that transmit the expressions of freedom." Agnes Lau

I"n this work, the artist visualizes a composition of a thick fury  cat that is trying to erect its body. the artist plays with monochrome color moods and uses a square format for this artwork.

Behind the narration of this artwork is, I was tickled to draw this cat because this cat was the first cat to be part of my family and called him by the nickname "Sulong". I remember and miss my family in the village. But, why did I draw a cat? because he was a astray cat at the time then i found by myself under the car engine while I was still in the village when that cat was a little child. This cat was raised by my father from the cat still little child, until the cat was mature.

Now, the cat is in my house, at Kuala Terengganu. He was the caretaker of the my house area to repel the feral cats that tried to invade my house area. Moreover, it already has its own family. that's about "Sulong" a part of my family and my family cat. - Aiman Aisamuddin

“As a wildlife artist, the study of species intrigues me especially about its uniqueness. I found it rather interesting that for the Lions, its Mane tells so much about each individual lion: it is their ID card so to speak and holds most information about it. The presence, absence, colour and size of the mane are associated with genetic precondition, sexual maturity, climate and testosterone production; the rule of thumb is that a darker, fuller mane indicates a healthier animal. The mane makes the Lion look so powerful and majestic which has earned him the rightful title as King of the Jungle.” - Christine Das

Resting Place is about the importance of Trees which make up forest. It is home for so many creatures and each tree is like a condo! When you chop down a single tree,  you are chopping down the homes of many living beings. Birds especially rely on trees as their resting place and food provider.”-Christine Das

"This artwork is inspired by Dunhuang murals. The thick texture metaphors the profound cultural heritage of Dunhuang. The Dunhuang-style Buddha statues painted with the Gongbi technique are used as the theme of the painting. Use sculpting paste mixed with acrylic to make the bottom texture on the canvas. Then superimpose the silk on the mixture and pour blue epoxy resin to fix the folds of the silk. Use ink to draw the Dunhuang Buddha statue on paper, and then burn the texture of the paper with incense sticks. Put the Buddha image on silk covered with epoxy resin. Finally, blue epoxy resin and transparent epoxy resin were poured on the surface to form a flowing texture." - Liu Runhong

"Someone at ease, depicting how people survived in this pandemic era. With the main symbol of the banana field, for her, it is very similar to human growth nowadays. it is related to emotion and human social relations. the simplicity of banana seed itself that can’t grow alone but depends on other banana trees. either young and old. This is very metaphoric to people in her surroundings, people survive whenever it takes, hold on to another. realistically, in our society being stated as “bendera putih“. After all, it will be a wisdom that all of us will be reminiscing on one day." - Izwa Ahmad

"This piece showed a character from Medabot, a Japanese animation series which is called Metabee. This series was released in 1999 in Japan, but became popular in Malaysia around the 2000s. This  robotic character represents technology, hope and future, placed on the centre imaginative naive forest landscape. The artist attempted to juxtapose the seemingly abandoned character against a decoratively floral element symbolic of a stopover space seeking serenity; it’s a self-escape from the hustle and bustle – in hopes of a better future after the pandemic." - Aimman Hafizal

- Amierul Romiza

“My work was a self-expression of how I experience auditory hallucination over the years as I was diagnosed as bipolar disorder with auditory hallucination. A series of paintings that explain how I evolved myself while dealing with my battle of mental illness over the years. A glimpse of how auditory hallucination affects me as a whole person of struggles and self - doubts with my mental illness. It is not something that will go away overnight, it is a part of me and I must fight every day to be someone better in the future. It is something that I would like to share my stories through art about my auditory hallucination.” - Siti Aishah binti Shahruddin

"The main idea for my painting is “unity”. In my opinion, unity is about the relationship between one and others which is the same reason as to why I chose this process as the main idea. It shows the symbol of relation which basically happens between the artist and their artworks. I am very subtle with all the processes and decision-making in my artworks because the process itself brings up the conversation between the artist (me) and the artwork such as decision-making in the canvas, erasing and layering to evoke satisfaction in it. Occasionally, I would rely on the chance of the process of accidental and incidental effects on the canvas.

My abstract painting does not involve any sketches in order to compose the structure. Abstract is very organic to me. In other words, I would often let the outcomes display naturally and unplanned because the process can make my painting change from time to time until I decide that the final outcomes meet my satisfaction. Somehow, my unplanned painting technique makes the painting feel alive as if the canvas brings up the conversation and arguments between it (artwork) and myself." - Nadzrin Haziq

"My work is inspired by the history of Malaysia, in 1958 the "Bunga Raya" was named as the National Flower among seven other flowers choices. Bunga Raya is also symbolic of the history of the formation of Malaysia (Peninsular Land Coalition, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore). It’s in line with the combination of dots on my artwork that are continuous with each other to form a Hibiscus visual." - SM Raja

Hafizuddin Mat Yashim, Lanskap Silam 2ftx2ft, Acrylic on Canvas, 2021, Rm1200.jpg

- Adinur Iman

Hanging on for dear life high res.jpg

"Back in my early teen years, I really wish I had a pair of Converse shoes. I felt that was the coolest shoe in my eyes at the moment. But as a teen, the price of that branded shoes was quite expensive. So, after I graduated secondary school, got my first part time job and with my first paycheck, I bought the shoes. Still remembered the euphoric feelings at that time. At first, I rarely wear it, afraid it will get dirtier. But as time passes and I entered university. The shoes turned to my almost daily wear shoes. Got to admit it’s not the comfiest and it took times to take off the shoes because of the high cut style. Nevertheless, I was happy because I got to put on my favourite shoes. But now, the shoes are already worn out, the soles have gotten thinner, and the shoelace wasn’t the whitest as like the first time I bought. Pretty upset as I couldn’t wear it anymore but really appreciated the memories and experience gained during wearing the Red Converse shoes." - Atikah Azman

"As an artist, I’m essentially interested in expressing and capturing the beauty of mundane subject matter. My inspiration originates from a traditional malay quatrain called ‘Pantun Hutang Emas, Hutang Budi’ which symbolize the essence of virtue (budi) and plays a pivotal role in every aspect of Malay culture. The artwork I recreated on this canvas illustrates the opening two verses of the famous classical poem by literal sense. Pisang emas dibawa belayar, Masak sebiji diatas peti, Hutang emas boleh dibayar, Hutang budi di bawa mati." - Nazreen Nor

“This social question imposes. Many are dedicated to it and study it swiftly to resolve it. “Depicting the urgency of the here and now is a crucial element in my practice. Whether en plein air in landscape compositions, or alla prima portraiture, the urge to record an instance is something that I try to express through the practice of working from life. My aim is to project an aesthetic quality of presence in otherwise overlooked, or neglected sites and subject matter, being a record of a particular quality of light observed in that location.

This plein air painting is a depiction of a woodshed found in a typical bidayuh bori toyak, or farmhouse. Done over several dozen 3-hour sessions from life, the painting is part of 'Menua Kitai', a series looking at the histories and cultural practices associated with the customary land of indigenous peoples in East and West Malaysia.” - Brandon Anak Simon Scott

“I approach my personal story as a chicken farmer’s daughter in a series of work. Last nineteenth years ago, while I am in sixth years old, my father worked as a chicken farmer. He bred chicken in a land of three acres, in Jeram Kuala Selangor. My father has three chicken coops with about thousands of chickens. We are living in a Malay Traditional house and our life is poor. I have eight siblings, a father and also a mother at that time. It is not easy living in the village, surrounded by thousands of chickens, and our family looks so disgusting by our neighbours. Just like we know, the red carpet is usually used to celebrate special guests. So I try to put the chicken on the red carpet to celebrate the chicken as a special animal for me, and my family. They are part of our family and they cheer our life. But although the life was full of guesses and challenges, all of that had long been passed and became the most beautiful memories of my life.” - Faidah Nazeri

Lost Conversations_Front.jpg

“This piece celebrates lost relationships, be they platonic or romantic. While stitching this piece, my mind went back to lost connections, lost friendships/relationships. I thought of conversations as the lines emerge in this piece. I thought of memories of moments, meaningful only to the one who still recalls it, and even in recollection perhaps not even close to what really happened. I thought of how reminiscing adds a different tone to an overlooked conversation between people who ended up losing each other.

We don’t have to remain or try to reconnect. The beauty of a moment stays in that time and space. We can only celebrate the fact that it existed. I let you go as you let me go. Thank you for the time and space we shared. May we go on our journeys safely.” - Xeem Noor

The Endless Chatter_ok.jpg

“The Endless Chatter series is inspired by the concept of the butterfly effect. This concept is vividly expressed as: The cause of a tornado in Texas, USA, may be caused by a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon River two weeks ago. Meteorologists believe that there are ‘countless butterflies’ in the sky affecting our weather.

Since the epidemic began to spread, the world has been particularly noisy. Various rumours and information flooded in through the internet/mobile phones. All kinds of disputes, true and false news, sometimes make me feel irritated. Such endless chatter seems to show me thousands of invisible butterflies flapping their wings. The noise and restlessness spread deep inside”

" The most precious time that all of us need in life is to have quality time with family. Though we faced a lot of problems during the pandemic, I believe the boundaries in the family were strong enough to make all the difference in our lives. These works were focused on the message of the importance of family boundaries in life. By replicating the old drawing from childhood into the new space of art by imitating the old drawing onto the surface. The recreation of folded paper surfaces brings the message of, though it is an old memory of ours still it can give all of us the appreciation and love to the family." - Saiful Aiman

“This work came about when I was intrigued by Mufti Menk’s words in relation to a lesson from a tree. He interprets the tree as a being with a high self-esteem. The tree does not care what people around say, and only does its job as a tree.” -Wan Ahmad Idham

"Whether there are birds that want to perch or not, I don't care.. I will still provide the fruit every year. I will still give shade to anyone who wants to take advantage of it.. “The state of the new norms in this country has a lot of impact and negative effects on our entire society. It is a difficult challenge for Malaysia to continue to fight and be strong in addressing the issues it faces. This artwork reflects the current situation with a personal interpretation through the making process. The darkness represents the misery the country was going through. The effect of a collision between two different properties creates a new texture on a surface. It is symbolic of the impact of this pandemic on Malaysia in dealing with the current crisis. The painter insists that he was not painting the flag but painting the current situation.” - Dzur Fazreen Dzulkiffli

There are a number of people in our country (Malaysia) who are defying the government's current orders, which has resulted in even more devastating pandemic issues. “This work is about a new life in a traditional Chinese family. In this work, the cradle is something that the Malaysian people are still using to soothe their children. When a newborn is born, the Chinese tend to worship God to bless the children to be safe and sound.” - Lim Soon Hock

Boundless Horizon.jpg

“Having been unable to visit my sons in Canada due to the pandemic, I was reminded of a time I spent with them during my stay. Trekking through a reserved forest with my sons, we caught sight of a light house in the distance. Standing tall and firm on a pier, at the base of the light house, we were greeted with a magnificent view of the solemn sea. From despair to hope, we have to bear in mind that after the hard times, the good times will flow. Similarly, I will be reunited with my children once again.” - Alex Liong

Survival Of The Fittest.jpg

“This artwork allows me to reminisce about the times I had with my long-lost uncle prior to Covid-19. Before the pandemic, while on the way to visit my uncle in Australia, I came across a desert in the outskirts of town. All around me, millions of sandstones formed together to create pillared structures in this lonely place. Since I was young, my excitement grew whenever I expected to meet my uncle. Like a cactus in the desert, he lives alone, sustaining himself in this strange and challenging environment. His positive attitude in life serves as a strong encouragement to me and I will always be thinking of him and his relevance in my life.” - Alex Liong

"“Lost in different dimension” adalah sebuah karya yang diinspirasi daripada pengalaman pengkarya dalam menterjemahkan keadaan semasa pendamik berlaku terhadap dirinya.  Seperti berada dalam keadaan kekeliruan, tanda tanya, dan tersekat. Karya ini dihasilkan dengan menggabungkan visual “invert” dan visual biasa bagi menyampaikan mesej yang tersurat dan tersirat" - Hasbi  Hazairin

“This artwork is an expression of my perspective of this year's celebration of Independence Day. We've come a long way since our first 'Merdeka' celebration during the pandemic last year. Last year, it was all about staying strong and finding meaning behind celebrating that special day since we underwent lockdown. Personally, at that time, I felt that we were all united in fighting against Covid-19. However, as time passed, we saw many of our great icons and leaders fighting amongst each other, corruption becoming more apparent, incredulous policies implemented and double standard treatment by government officials becoming clearer that the hashtag ‘#KitaJagaKita’ was commonly used in the media. People were disunited, broken and hopeless by the country's situation. This caused me to question the meaning of this year’s Independence Day.  How could we celebrate without acknowledging the issues at hand? Was last year’s fight all for naught?” - Ana Alasri

“Relevant is a series of artwork that follows the artist on a quest to discover the self through a recollection of the human experience — an up-close and personal journey into SITIS' cycles of thoughts that explores her coping mechanisms. She explores life through aspects of behaviour, belief, and awareness that occur in cycles and patterns. The paintings produced in for this series is an extension for the artist's main body of work; a nine-minute short video which is available to view upon request.”- SITIS

I'm Ready To Be Interim PM _edited.jpg

In this series of works, I would like to focus on the chaos of political nowadays. The motives behind their speech and decision are always different. Especially when people are suffered from the impact of pandemics, they focus on their authority and self-benefit instead of solving the issues. In my works, I deconstructed the politician’s portrait and reveal the inner part. The fragility on the surface represents the unreliability of their public image, together with the chaos of the underlayer paints, create the conflicts and represent the political turmoil.

“This artwork artistic practice is related to the objects during my childhood age, some holding important emotional significance, some simply ordinary objects and most of us would find it banal or unimportant. She is trying to explore the precious moment between the past generation as compared to the current generation. The choice of her subject is determined by what she finds interesting in shape, colour, texture and attractive old objects that can evoke people memories. Her main source of inspiration comes from her mother and her memory of younger daily routine.” - Felicia Jia Hui

“My works present metaphors of my unconscious states. While embodying my own perspective of the world, landscapes act as a mirror, landscape as concrete of my inner world, showing the emptiness of human beings. It is not necessary to limit painting but painting and is a must. My works are less interested in the narrative to allow viewers’ own interpretation. For me, artistic creation is the way to learn from self-discovery and self-healing practice.” - Viko Zhijune

"Self-judgment results from thoughts individuals have about themselves and the meanings attached to those thoughts. The thoughts, hence, produce related feelings such as anxiety, anger, and depression. Judgments (The process of forming an opinion, or reaching a conclusion based on the available material.) people make about themselves can become habituated as they are used to explain and validate unhelpful thoughts (e.g., If I am harsh on myself, other people will not be as harsh) and they might, accordingly, be intended to protect people against emotional pain, failure and rejection.

Invisible Subject is not invisible to the subject, meaning the subject may fully concsious to himself rather the audience feel this subject is invisible. This is message to all the invisible subject out there to find a little bit of light.

ReHope.jpg

"From the story of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, origami crane culturally became the symbol of hope and healing during challenging times. But only recently I realised – from the pandemic that robbed thousands of lives to the conflict of human rights, races, and politics – that hope can arise from any form. Be it frontliners that we see as heroes, or children and innocents that the heroes trying to protect, everyone has their own vision of “hope”. Here, I melted the former symbol of hope for you to cast your very own symbol of HOPE.” - Izhar Yusrin

From that moment on, I knew when there is a disaster, there is always hands to help. Instead of picking a side or blaming each other when we faced a crisis like Covid-19, I choose to look at all the heroes of the frontlines that spread hope to humanity.” - Izhar Yusrin
